Board Evaluations: Moving from Checkbox to Catalyst for Change

Strategy

April 30, 2026

The annual board evaluation can seem like just another administrative task to check off the list. Yet, when approached thoughtfully, it can be one of the most powerful tools for improving board effectiveness and accelerating your own development as a director.

Too many boards treat evaluations as a formality. It is recommended that boards conduct full board, committee, and individual director evaluations on a regular basis. Research shows that 74% of directors believe evaluations are an effective tool to enhance board performance, yet only 58% report making changes to board practices following an evaluation. This indicates that while most directors see value in evaluations, there is still room for improvement in translating these assessments into action. Too often, evaluations risk becoming a procedural step rather than a driver of meaningful improvement.

From Checkbox to Change

For new directors, evaluations offer a unique opportunity to learn, grow, and establish credibility. They provide insight into board dynamics, clarify expectations, and highlight areas for personal development. More importantly, they can help you understand how your contributions are perceived and where you can add the most value. So how can new directors ensure that board evaluations serve as a catalyst for positive change rather than a mere checkbox?

  • First, prepare thoroughly. Review past evaluation reports, board charters, and meeting materials to understand the board’s priorities and how effectiveness is measured. This preparation will help you provide thoughtful, constructive feedback and demonstrate your engagement from day one.
  • Second, be candid but constructive. Evaluations are most valuable when they reflect honest assessments. As a new director, your fresh perspective can be particularly valuable in identifying blind spots or areas for improvement that long-standing members might overlook. Frame your feedback in a way that is actionable and focused on enhancing the board’s collective performance.
  • Third, use evaluations as a learning tool. Pay attention to the feedback you receive, both formal and informal. If the evaluation process includes peer feedback, use it as a chance to understand how your contributions are perceived and where you can improve. This is especially important for first-time directors, who may still be navigating the nuances of boardroom dynamics.
  • Finally, follow up on results. The real value of evaluations comes from what happens after they are completed. Advocate for a discussion of the results and the development of an action plan to address any identified gaps. This ensures that the evaluation process leads to tangible improvements in board effectiveness.

Accelerating Your Growth

Board evaluations shouldn’t be a perfunctory exercise. For new directors, they represent a chance to learn, grow, and add value from the start. By treating evaluations as a catalyst for continuous improvement rather than a checkbox, you can help transform your board’s effectiveness while accelerating your own development as a director.
